William Thornton - Toronto's first fallen firefighter

A memorial stone was recently placed on the grave of the first firefighter to die in the line of duty in Toronto. William Thornton age 22, died November 22, 1848 in Toronto, Ontario in a fire at the corner of King St. and Church St.  He is buried in St. James Cemetery.

I don't believe he is connected to our Thornton tree. He was from Ireland and our branches were from Scotland.

The city of Toronto website has a page dedicated to Toronto's Fallen Firefighters. There is a write up on the page about Thornton. The Firefighters association has a page about Thornton as well.
